Work hard, play double hard

There is no shortcut to success. Surely someone will have told you that hardwork doesn't mean anything.

It's true, but without working hard, where the success comes from? Even striking lottery require patience and hard work to queue and buy.

However, what is the point of working so hard without a proper life and enjoyment ? You will only burn out sooner than later. Therefore, balance is important.

Personally ,  I am practicing 4 man hours per day. That means I work only 4 hours, but I fully focused and work doubly hard to cover 12 hours of work within 4 hours. It give me a good 20 hours to enjoy, watch TV,  play game etc.

Your thoughts?

Objective Driven Rest - How to rest and work effectively.

Many of us like me are very busy from the start till the end of the day. These few weeks has been especially busy due to the fact that we are hiring more peeps and focusing on multiple projects, at times, we do not even have time for lunch or dinner.

However, being a smoker myself, i always asked myself why i feel much more refreshed and 'ready-to-go' after each smoke break - The answer is cigarette itself offers very little refreshment, but the 5-10 mins break from the hectic workload offers REFLECTION, THINKING OUT OF BOX and most importantly, REST.

A lot of people either work too much or rest too much, I have read a lot of articles on work-rest balance, some sort of 45-15 rule. Work 45 minutes, rest 15 minutes etc. I find this not productive and effective due to the fact that on the 40th minute mark, you may be on the verge of completing a major task, if you choose to rest for 15 minutes, you may lost the momentum when you are back and may waste the next 5 to 10 minutes refreshing yourself on where you last stop.

Therefore, I encourage people to use the technique of rest and i call it 'Objective Driven Rest'.

If you got quite a few short tasks, complete your tasks and rest for 15 minutes.

If you got a big and long tasks, spend 5 minutes to break down the big tasks into small objectives. Once u complete any objective, reward yourself with a 5-10 minutes break. Toilet breaks are inclusive in the breaks I have spoken about.

Once you practice the above, you will realize that not only you feel more refresh, you will become more productive than ever. Instead of worrying about uncompleted task(s) during your break, you will be relaxed knowing you are progressing without any unnecessary stoppages.

Good luck and feel free to comment below.

Dream vs Reality (Big Ideas vs Sure-fire ideas)

Due to the chinese new year, once again, i decided to blog more often these days. Today i faced possibly one of the biggest decision of my life by deciding which route to take for my business to grow.

Very often, i realise most businesses make-or-break are not due to the first business, but rather, the second business that the company ventures into. The next or second venture can either provide more ammunition for the 1st, or pull down the entire operations of both.

I have always ask myself this - What is the right thing to do? To decide what to do for the day is easy, but deciding what to do for the next venture is extremely difficult as there are alot more factors to consider such as, how much am I going to invest etc.

Today i will speak about dream vs reality.

Dream (Big ideas)
Ideally everyone wants to become rich and powerful, therefore, think of big ideas which very often include more risks, effort and luck. If dream is pursuit, most like the result will be on both extreme end of failure or success. In business i suppose, if can be measured, big ideas normally earn you up to millions or even billions. Big ideas often comes with a lot of patience and sacrifices, however, as opposed to sure-fire ideas, if realistic big ideas are being carried out, very often the competition is lower as not many or none of the companies in the country or world is doing.

My definition of big ideas are ideas that can disrupt or change the world by sacrificing the traditions for new technologies or methodologies.

Sure-fire ideas
On the other hand, sure-fire ideas are ideas such as opening a cafe, restaurant or bar where the customers will recognize and patronize without much convincing. These type of ideas normally suit those lower risk take who are what i call a 'S' type of people. The entry level is much easier as compared to big ideas, as such, due to the competition on branding, quality, price etc, many of these ideas could not yield much success. However, with a good financial backer or investor, these ideas can still earn you big bucks over a longer period of time.

My definition of sure-fire ideas are ideas that are already in the market, where business can be conducted without much convincing.

Making a decision between the 2 is like comparing chicken and duck. Both has its pros and cons. Which one will you choose if you were me?

Obviously, my first business has already embarked on changing the existing market for a better where we spent the past 18 months persuading and convincing business owners to change their existing model. It is still work in progress and hope we see improvements soon.

No Idea or hiatus
There is also a 3rd type of ideas which I call No-idea. No idea in my context represent focusing on what we already have. No-idea sounds freaky, but sometimes, no idea is better than having a bad idea! Focus is always good but putting all the eggs into one basket may result in total loss at some point unless something happens.

You may or may not agree with my post but I would say, there isnt any best idea out there as the 3 ideas above can still prove successful with hardwork and luck. However, if you were to ask me, i would choose big ideas, simply because ideas takes time to see results (and i am talking about 3-15 years) , that is almost 20% of my life. Therefore, i would rather fail in big ideas than to stuck with a sure-fire ideas for the rest of my life. Your choice?

Creative in different ways - Left Handedness

To start off, i would like to place a disclaimer for this post: I am not well educated - as such, please pardon me for my use of English.

After a long study on left handers around the globe and especially those around me, i realised that most are born between december to end of feb - most being aquarius, and I am one of these.

24 hours more to my birthday and i decide to post something on life being a left-handers, the challenges and what to expect of us.

According to research, 10% of the world population are left-handed who are mostly right-brained personnel, i wont go into details what right-brained means. However, most of us do share common attributes such as always late, untidy yet being able to think out of the box.

Quite a handful of my friends who are left-handed are quite good in art, creative in thoughts, some of whom currently work as designers (i.e. graphic designers or interior designers) - but i am not one though!

Being left-handed at times is very painful, such as pencil mark on our hand after writing (from left to right), got to adapt to some right-hand designed rifles, tools etc. It is no coincidence that some of us can use both hands to write or even play pool or any other sports. It is because in many occasions, we are forced to use our weaker hand to work or do stuffs.

Despite the above struggles, I am still proud to be different, think different. Many chinese would say left handers are intelligent. The truth is LH thinks differently and process information we gotten differently, and that does not mean we are intelligent. Still, there are alot of scientists, lawyers or CEOs are right handed.

Being a left-handed myself, i am not really good at designing although I am quite particular in designs. I get 'high' for seeing something different, out-of-the-box or well designed. But i guess, i am creative in a different way compared to other lefties. I design systems that are to be used by businesses and i love the smile my clients give when they are  satisfied with my work. I cant help but to think of ways to improve the design or think of new and creative ideas to boost either my business or software (new or existing).

I get bored quite soon after engaging or focusing on 1 project pretty soon (if u consider 1 year is soon), therefore, every single day i will create new challenges for myself; most people would say I am creating more problems for myself each day.

Truth of the matter is, I am not really bothered by what others might say even though I love having a friendly and constructive debate over my ideas. One thing I am sure is, if you want to succeed in life, dont care what others will say, simply because it is impossible to please everyone and they will not criticize you when u suceed. Some may even say "I've told you it will work", when obviously, they are the most harsh towards you when u started.

To conclude, I would say to all lefties out there, don't be push back by what the world may say about you. Think what u like to think and do what u like to do.

Have an aim and go all out for that, of course, you must put hard work and pain into it. Make it a success to shut the doubters mouth once and for all!

Lastly, Happy early birthday to myself =)

How to be on time for Appointment

1. Make a list of items you’ll need for regular appointments.

Do you waste time every week trying to think of all the different items you’ll need to bring with you for a recurring appointment? Save time by writing out a list of all the different items you’ll need to pack. If you’re meeting your personal trainer at the gym, you might list workout clothes, sneakers, towel, water bottle, gym membership card, and gym bag. Drop this list into your calendar for easy reference.

2. Pack your bag a few hours in advance.

Your mind is super-busy and occupied when it comes to leaving on time for appointments. Instead of waiting until the last minute to pack up your belongings, start early and pack things up a couple of hours in advance when your mind is still cool, calm and collected. Of course, you might not be able pack everything all at once, but you can rest a little easier knowing a good chunk of your packing is already completed.

3. Stop multi-tasking before leaving for an appointment.

Do you check email, text, watch TV and play with your pets as you get ready to leave for your appointment? Declare a ban on multi-tasking and focus your efforts on getting ready to leave and only getting ready to leave.

4. Get out of the habit of doing “just one more thing” as you’re getting ready to leave.

Stop! Back away from that stack of papers that needs to be filed and that pile of laundry that needs to be folded. Just like multi-tasking, starting “just one” new task as you’re getting ready to leave for an appointment is disruptive to your schedule and often takes over your initial goal of leaving on time. The next time you feel yourself reaching to complete an extra task, stop, take a deep breath, and fix your mind on getting yourself and your belongings ready for your meeting.

5. Don’t schedule back-to-back appointments.

Scheduling appointments back-to-back is a recipe for lateness. If any one of your appointments runs late or is delayed, you’ll be behind schedule and will have to make up for lost time.

6. Schedule travel time in your calendar.

Penciling travel time into your calendar makes it crystal clear as to when you need to stop your work, pack up, and hit the road. Once you start dropping travel time into your calendar, you’ll become more and more aware of how much time you actually need to get from point A to point B.

7. Create a time buffer for yourself.

Going from appointment to appointment can be fraught with travel delays, communication snafus and other headaches. Make things more comfortable for yourself by adding a buffer of more time in addition to your travel time. At the very least, you’ll have enough time to arrive at your destination and get settled in comfort, and if you do find yourself running a bit later than usual, you’ll have this buffer of time to cover any unforeseen delays.

8. Plan to catch a specific train, bus, ferry, plane, etc.

Don’t expect there to be a public transportation connection when you need it! If you’re not careful about how you plan your travel, you might arrive thirty seconds too late for a bus that would have taken you to your destination on time. Check schedules online, download a transit app on your phone, or simply pick up a schedule booklet.

Easy tips on how to set new year resolution

What a year of transformation it was for 2013 as we ushered in 2014. 2014 may be the defining moments of my life and our company as we seek to have the breakthrough.

Many of us gave our pledge to new year resolution and promises such as slimming down, earning more money, better relationship etc where it is immediately diminished upon the 2nd day of the year. It is something similar to prayer. Many of us didn't realize the importance of having our goals and target specific. Yes, the keyword is SPECIFIC.

Try writing your goals in such manner as below:
- I want to earn $100000 by Dec 31 2014
- I want to slim down by 1kg per month
Etc

Don't be lazy, set out a plan to achieve your goals. If you want to earn $100000, you should be earning at least $9000 a month and so on and so forth.

Write down how you going to achieve it in details so that you can track your progress. Miraculously, sometime thing will be in place when u are specific and well planned. However, be ready to be flexible changes along the way but never adjust your target.

Last year we set goals for our company and we met it using the above methods.  This year we will continue to do it as it is a proven method.

Most importantly, pray and ask God for favor and protection over the course as it is always better to relay on Him than our own means.

I hope you will enjoy a coffee and think it through what you want to achieve and most importantly write it down somewhere.

Last but no least, don't make your target realistic, make it slightly more than being realistic, because what is the point of being realistic when a goal is easily achievable. Do the can't do and challenge yourself!
